The hill is quite steep and when I arrive at the top I am slightly
out of breath. However the view from the top is tremendous with a magnificent
view over the whole City.
I can see what looks like a large telescope construction in front of me
projecting from a grassy mound in the earth. It seems to be pointing towards
the sun. Looking around I can see no other forms until eventually I see
what looks like a sloping doorway set into the ground. Opening the door
I descend a stairway into the ground. Its getting darker and darker.Further
along I become aware of a voice- - its low level – It’s a
child’s voice. You are entering the Light Lock please take a seat
and allow your eyes to adjust to the light level. The door will open in
three minutes and 45 seconds. I take a seat and slowly my eyes adjust.
I am in a small room with seats around the edges. I cannot see where the
light is coming from. There are people sitting all around Its very quiet.Eventually
the voice says” door is now open” People are standing up and
walking out .I follow and walk along a narrow sloping corridor. There
is a rail to hold on to. It seems to be getting lighter although still
no sign of where the light source is. Eventually I seem to be at the end
of the corridor. It opens out into a much larger space. I allow my eyes
to adjust even more. The floor is gently curved away from me. I seem to
be standing on the inside of a large sphere. I can see an intense light
area in front of me. Seems to be projecting from the end of a large tube.
I can eventually make out more and more in the space. Reflected light
is slowly filling up the space. People are standing and some sitting all
around the space. If people speak they do so quietly. Briefly, the room
dims, and then returns. No explanation.
I investigate the tube, which seems to be the source. It’s too close
to the ground to look up into. Some powerful source of light is being
projected along its interior. I wonder what it could be. I overhear someone
say “sunlight”. I realize I am in an underground cavern completely
illuminated by reflected sunlight. I wonder if the light along the corridors
has been fed from the same source. I take a seat on the floor, as other
people seem to be doing. It’s still very quiet. People are talking
but with muted voices. A child suddenly starts crying and is comforted
by a parent then its quiet again. I spend quite some time just sitting
here. The room changes with people coming and going. After quite a long
a time I become aware that the angle of the tube has changed. I surmise
that the tube is tracking the sun across the sky. Like a cross between
a camera and a telescope light is fed along its path and into the space.
The intensity is astounding. This whole large space is being lit by reflected
sunlight. The actual opening at the end of the tube is quite small relative
to the space. Higher up along its length there seem to be other small
openings, which are letting light out into the space. Beams of light from
around the top third of the section are projecting across the space. I
wonder about the persistence of light and its ability to reflect and refract
into many different spaces and configurations. After a while, the light
dims quite dramatically. The ambience changes, some people get frightened
and make their way towards the exit. Others just stay sitting and standing
around. Some talking, some just sitting and ‘reflecting’.I
realize that most surfaces are a dull metallic substance. Cold to touch
initially but where I am sitting warms eventually. There is very little
by way of detail in the space. Just the gently sloping floor and the ‘telescope’
I find myself looking at the way he floor panels are joined, looks like
they have been riveted or bolted onto some frame hidden below.Oddly the
space is not claustrophobic. I begin to feel ‘at home’.
Eventually everyone leaves and I am alone in the space. What time is it?
I have no idea.
I make my way towards what I think is the exit. I am in another small
room, which is similar to the initial one. The light level is slowly increasing.
I am sitting on one of the benches. I can make out that they are maps
and charts on the wall. They are covered in astronomical maps and symbols.
It’s confusing. However I find one chart, which I can decipher.
As far as I can make out this evening will see a Full Moon.
